The Madrid (Europe) Metro has recently celebrated the opening of the long-awaited extension of Line 3 to El Casar station in Getafe.1 This significant infrastructure project, the first Metro extension in the Madrid region in over a decade, became operational on April 21, 2025.
This new 2.6-kilometer section provides a crucial second connection between MetroSur (Line 12), which serves the southern metropolitan area including Getafe, Alcorcón, Fuenlabrada, Leganés, and Móstoles, and the central Madrid Metro network. El Casar now acts as a vital interchange hub, linking Line 3 with Line 12 and the Cercanías Madrid commuter rail line C-3. This improved connectivity is expected to significantly benefit the over one million residents of these southern municipalities, offering them a more direct and efficient route to the Spanish capital.5
The El Casar station itself is a modern and spacious facility designed to handle the anticipated high volume of passengers. It features escalators, elevators ensuring accessibility for all, and a significant free park-and-ride facility with over 500 spaces, including charging points for electric vehicles, encouraging commuters to integrate different modes of transport.6 Authorities estimate that around 35,000 passengers will utilize this new section daily, reducing travel times and promoting sustainable mobility within the region.
This extension of Line 3 to El Casar marks a significant step in enhancing Madrid’s public transportation network, improving connections between the capital and its southern suburbs, and offering a more convenient and environmentally friendly travel option for a large number of people.8 The project, partly financed by European funds, underscores the commitment to developing integrated and accessible public transport solutions for the Madrid metropolitan area.9
