The Melody Festival – a strange circus only Sweden could have

The Melody Festival is something typical Swedish, and almost all the Swedish People like it or hate it. However, it’s a giant in the TV industry. Almost 4 million watch it, and that’s amazing in a country with less than 10 million habitants!

The Melody Festival is going on for 6 weeks every year and is broadcasted on the national TV, SVT1. Every week they are located in a new city. The music is known for their typical “Schlager” style, but has been more modern during the last few years, as more and more Idol singers join the show. Anyway, still there are lots of crazy performances. Last week,  for example Sean Banan won the final ticket with his childish song Copacabanana. He performed as a baby in diaper and before that he had pink child clothes. Probably, most of his fans are less than 8 years old…

And this week some old seniors had gone together as a band, with the crazy name Ravaillacz. The song is having childish text as “vote for us, we want to win, there are many silly songs in this schlager, but this is good, this is a really damn schlager song”. A song completely without content! And it wins!

What happens in Sweden, earlier known as a country with good musical taste.

Among the other 7 contributors, the 21 year old Janet Leon had a really strong performance with “Heartstrings”; a song we think will rule on discos for a long while. It was only number 5! Martin Rollinski’s contribution was also good, but very typical for Swedish Melody Festival, maybe too typical.

We think this trend is a bit scary. The “worst” songs win! This is not a fair competition anymore. It will be exciting to see the final winner of this competition. It is ready in 3 weeks.

But still the show is very entertaining. We like the pause events. We loved when the hosts Danny and Gina performed “In the club” in Indian style.
