In Norway, the students have had a quite long summer vacation including the interruptions during spring because of the Wuhan virus. But that’s not the case everywhere in the world. In Japan, some students only got 9 days with a holiday. Here is some news about that!
It is now known to Distrita that many of the schools across Japan reopened on Monday the 16th of August 2020 after a very short summer vacation. So I decided to write a few words about the news and how Norway in Europe differs so much than Japan in Asia on this topic.
The students summer holidays were all shortened to allow students to catch up on classes missed due to earlier closures caused by the Wuhan virus pandemic. The very short break was decided to be given to the students by the municipal authorities and some of the schools started up again after only nine days. Usually, Japanese students take more than a month’s summer vacation.
Students in Japan wearing face masks started arriving at Ushioda Elementary School in Yokohama at around 8 o’clock in the morning. Their summer vacation had been shortened by roughly half. In Norway, Europe that would have lead to humongous protests as summer is a holy time for students visiting family and friends for having fun.
Weather with temperatures at 35C or more didn’t postpone students start date at all
In Norway when it is +24C then it is hot. When it is however +28C people start to not arrive at jobs, but if it was 35C here I am sure no one had to go to school at all. But in Japan that doesn’t seem to be the chase. On the 16th of August, everyone had to start. However, All of the schools in Japan are required to take steps to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion as well as prevent the Wuhan virus to spread.
As always in August, the temperatures have risen rapidly in recent days in Japan, with the 35C temperature or above in many locations reached.
In the student classrooms, windows were left open for ventilation while the air conditioning was also running. A teacher told pupils that to prevent heat exhaustion, they can take off their masks as long as they maintain social distancing. In Norway, we just start to wear those masks.
Of the 1,794 local education boards across the country that closed elementary, middle, and high schools due to the pandemic, 1,710 boards said as of June 23 that they were planning to shorten summer vacations, according to the education ministry. 9 days is really short. For a country that got 4 seasons. The summer should be a much more family and friends orientated time of the year. To only have 9 days holiday is a crime against socialism. Japan should be milder towards its students.
