In the start of Android phone era, the phone makers made quite bad Android themes and filesystems. They also tried to block people from jailbreaking their Android phones, but people were smarter and CyanogenMod was one of those modifications that required a full jailbreaking of your Android phone for working as it should. I have installed it on several phones like Samsung Galaxy, HTC Z and LG. The most difficult one was HTC Z, as it had a really hard protection against jailbreaking. But it worked after 3 hours battle!
Cyanogen shuts Down CyanogenMod
The company called Cyanogen is shutting down all services related to CyanogenMod, effectively killing the Open Source community project, and since Cyanogen, Inc., owns all the trademarks regarding Cyanogen, the community project can’t continue operating as-is. Lineage OS is the new CyanogenMod it seems!
“Embracing that spirit, we the community of developers, designers, device maintainers and translators have taken the steps necessary to produce a fork of the CM source code and pending patches. This is more than just a ‘rebrand’. This fork will return to the grassroots community effort that used to define CM while maintaining the professional quality and reliability you have come to expect more recently.”
Open Source needs to be strong, or this will happen
Now, look at this! Open Source is nice when it is actually Open Source, but once some commercial interest hits it, project will easy die if the company isn’t serious enough in it. The it is dying and it ends like this or some other negative effects hits the community if the community is too weak. Same goes for other Linux distros, AROS and M!NT releases for Amiga and Atari communities. If people love a Open Source project, then this would not happen. Also the company should have had way more faith into its users.
It is good to see CyanogendMOD people taking it to the next level with Lineage OS. Good luck from us!
