More than 3.5 million people watched the Melody Festival

Melodifestivalen is an annual music competition organised by Swedish and determines the country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, and has been staged almost every year since 1959. Since 2000, the competition has been the most popular TV programme in Sweden.

The show has a very successful tour around in Sweden for 5 weeks, in February and March. The first semi final was last Saturday night between 8pm and 9:30pm, and had a rating of 3.5 million viewers! That’s an amazing number for Sweden with it’s 9 million habitants. That means that more than 1 of 3 Swedish chose the Melody Festival on TV instead of going out!

And we can understand that! The show is well produced. The hosts are funny, and even the waiting numbers show that SVT is working hard and a lot!

They simply stribe to get it as good as possible. The Melody festival is SVT’s pride. Every week 8 contestants compete, and 2 of them go directly to the gran final while 2 will get a 2nd chance in an upcoming show before the gran final. Most of the singers are the most attractive artists of Sweden, and it’s an honor getting the chance to compete in Sweden’s most popular show. It is a show everybody talks about. Earlier it was known for having their own music style, Schlager, but during the last few years they have changed style and know they have more varied music, but the pop music dominates.

They have had a reputation that the songs can’t win in the Eurovision show, because the Eastern countries dominate the voting, but last week Loreen won and showed Europe that even a Swedish singer can win the entire show!

We have watched the Norwegian Grand Prix too. It is the same concept, where absolutely nothing is good! We are embarrased watching the hosts and their comments. It looks like they haven’t been told what to say, and they just say something stupid. The Norwegian semifinal was watched by only 600.000 viewers last week and is having an identity problem. It is not very attractive to join the Norwegian competition, and the most popular singers don’t want to perform there. Last week some of the singer’s did not even have a solid vocal, and this is broadcasted on National TV!

The rating can only be beaten by the tradional “Donald Duck wishes everybody a Merry Christmas” on Christmas Eve, also brodcasted on Swedish TV, SVT1.
