Until now it feels like the competition in the mobile industry has been a bit boring. Everybody just copies each other with big touch screens, gorilla glasses, amoled and so on. You can almost not feel the difference if you hold a LG or Sony phone. They both have Android, and everything looks the same… It’s a bit boring, actually! Earlier there was a much more different experience to buy a new phone!
Well… Probably we can thank Apple and iPhone for this very boring development. They removed the qwerty keyboards completely. Earlier Blackberry had a huge success with their qwerties… Actually, Blackberry WAS qwerty! Today even Blackberry’s top models are touch screens, and look similar! A top model should be good at almost all the tasks… And most phones are stable today… They don’t restart as often as earlier… The bugs have gone… But not for all the companies… E.g HTC is wellknown for their problems with the purple tint colour in when catching dark photos with HTC one M7… Even HTC promised super quality photos in almost every condition with their Ultra Pixel cameras…
Samsung has announced the Galaxy S series with camera priority, they are quiet proud of the photo quality and camera features… But after using Galaxy S2, 3 and 4 for years, I cannot say I agree in that! Photos taken with Nokia N95 (before the iPhone was launched) took sharper photos! And they even had a button to hide the lense when you didn’t use the camera, and a dedicated camera button on the side! Today, almost Nokia/Microsoft is alone still offering dedicated camera buttons. But the lense is often not protected at all as it’s located some milimeteres outside of the backside! That means if the phone is falling into the ground, the risk to break the lense is very big! And if the screen side is falling into the ground, the risk to get scratches is extremely big! How often dont you see a touch screen with broken glass? And it doesn’t help much that the providers are proud of their Gorilla glasses of version 2 or 3!
Should it be necessarily to buy an ugly and heavy plastic case to carry it in? Phones are more expensive than laptops today! And we expect HIGHER quality and better functions! We can’t say much has happened since the iPhone came… The phones have been a bit lighter, and ofcourse the specs are growing. Processors, battery and so on get higher numbers! But do you feel it? If we go back to Nokia’s brilliance 15 years ago, the battery could last for 1 week even if you used it a lot! Today we have to charge the phone twice a day! And still it lags if you use many open apps!
Are we going in the correct dirrection? Why can’t we expect a phone to last more than 1 day when the battery is fully charged? Why can’t we expect a mobile camera to be as good a cheap digital camera? Why is it still easier to surf the web on a computer with a normal keyboard than a touch phone? Why are the speakers so annoying to listen to? It feels like no bass at all, almost like screaming so you can’t have max volume on! Why are some elementary functions hidden so you have to look for a long time in the settings?
I think we are still far from what the user really wants! And I think we can thank Apple for the slow development! Instead of researching, they spend lots of money on patents and lawiers to investigate the other companies! It’s so silly!
We should expect more from the companies! The consumers are probably a bit naive, as we buy the newest phone all the time. E.g iPhone 4 users feel that they must upgrade to iPhone 5 as soon as it arrives! Is it really so important to get 0,1″ bigger screen? The spec details are not so different!
In the video below you can have a look at 3 phones that the market almost has forgotten… And they deserve more publicity than they have got. I find them more interesting than iPhone 5 or Galaxy S5… These 3 phones, Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, Nokia Lumia 1020 and Sony QX 10 are probably the best camera mobiles for now…
