If you’ve every toyed with the idea of going to North Korea it’s likely that you’ve also dismissed it as being farfetched. No one gets into North Korea, right? Most people take this as fact without actually checking, but I can assure you, it’s quite simple to get a tourist visa for North Korea for most nationalities, including Americans (I mention Americans just because of the less than stellar relationship and rhetoric between the US and North Korea). As I understand only South Koreans are regularly denied a visa.
Get in touch with KITC to be able to enter North Korea
In order to get a tourist visa to North Korea you simply need to get in touch with a travel agency that are able to set up a trip with the Korea International Travel Company (KITC). This is the official North Korean tourism bureau. This is because in order to travel to North Korea you have to travel in a group with assigned North Korean guides. You will not be able to wander off on your own and talk to the locals exactly.
I went with Young Pioneer Tours on www.youngpioneertours.com. They really delivered the goods.
After I had booked my trip to NK I received a visa application form in a Word document. I simply filled it out and set it back per email. When I arrived in Beijing I received my visa on a piece of paper, not in my passport. This was just as well, since it might not be ideal to have a North Korean visa in your passport the next time you apply for a visa.
