Many people today are looking for ways to limit their energy consumption due to huge cost of energy. At present, one of the most intelligent and efficient forms of commercial and residential lighting available is LED lighting.
LED lighting is becoming increasingly popular due to several benefits that come with it. It has durable bulbs that produce far brighter lights. Besides, it is environmentally friendly and highly efficient. These are some reasons why numerous people are giving it due consideration to illuminate their homes, major streets, landmarks and buildings.
What is LED Lighting?
LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. As a device, it converts electricity into light. This has been in existence since 1960. LED lights, unlike the conventional bulbs, generate lights without the aid of filaments. They have diodes which serve as their lighting source of power. The diameter of the diodes is approximately 1/4 inch. Each diode consumes about 10 milliamps of electricity, which they require for generating light at approximately 1/10 of a watt.
LEDs are usually grouped together to enhance higher intensity because of their small sizes. By using the power that is generated by motion of electrons, LEDs are able to operate and generate white light.
In present age, LED lighting exists in several efficiencies. For residential purposes, there are now LED lights that are about 20 lumens/watts. Some are even as much as 160 watts.
LED lighting bulbs have become universally known and acceptable for the following reasons:
They save energy
More and more people are now turning to LED lighting. The reason is not far-fetched. Energy costs are constantly increasing! LED lighting requires far lesser amount of energy than what the traditional bulbs require for light production.
There is a process by which LED light bulbs produce light. This is called electroluminescence. With this method, the amount of energy being wasted by traditional bulbs is reduced. Furthermore, LED light has a smaller structure when compared to the conventional bulbs. This implies that lesser wattage is required by it to generate the same amount of illumination that conventional bulbs generate with higher amount of wattage. This is why it decreases both energy consumption and electric bills.
Durability or Longer Lifespan
Unlike other lighting sources, LED light bulbs can exist for a very long time. It can endure up to 100,000 hours beyond other lighting alternatives due to absence of burning filaments, shortening wicks or consumable vapors in it.
In addition, LED light bulbs have stationary parts, making them to be more resistant to shocks and vibrations. Besides their resistance property, they are also tough. In fact, they are tougher than other bulbs and obviously the most durable source of light.
Switching is Faster
Unlike the incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LED lighting does not generate light through superheating. However, its light generation occurs immediately electricity is transmitted to the chip. As a result of this, LED lights can quickly switch on and off than other lighting alternatives. Full brightness can be generated with it in a flash.
Environmental-Friendly and Safe
As earlier mentioned, LED lighting is environmental-friendly and safe. Unlike fluorescent bulbs that contain mercury vapor that is toxic, LED lighting is extremely safe to humans and other life forms.
