Did you think you had to go to Brazil to get an exciting carnival party experience in Feburary? You’re wrong. The sunniest and warmest place in Europe during winter and noted for its mild temperatures and its natural environment… It’s also a carnival destination in February/March! If you go soon, enjoy hilarious addition to the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Everybody celebrates the carnival there, also the smaller islands. But Tenerife’s capital is the centre of carnival with massive costumes and funny decorations! People live the Spanish style here… That means you will probably not see many carnival people here at daytime. People sleep and go out for a looong night instead! Possibly you will not sleep until late next morning, maybe 9am! Try out lots of public food courts, local sweet food, hot food, fruit, ice cream, chocolates, chips, fruit juices, smoothies, cervezas and other alcoholic beverages! The entire canaries change to a big carnival destination, so if you have been to the Canaries but never discovered the carnival, then maybe it’s time for you to discover it this year?
Anyway, if you visit the Canaries later as well, you will have lots to look forward to. In fact, five of the seven islands are declared Biosphere Reserves and they have four National Parks. One of its main attractions are its beaches, perfect for relaxing sunbathing or practicing water sports such as windsurfing and diving. Tenerife is maybe most known for Teide, Spanish tallest mountain, and some scenes here are captured in Star Wars movies, so it quite amazing! If you move away from the cities and the touristic resorts, you will find amazing landscapes that encourage hiking, cycling, climbing or even spelunking. Among the most striking, highlighting the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote, the sand dune beaches of Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria or the green forests of La Palma and La Gomera. In the Canaries, you will also find cultural proposals as to know the monuments of San Cristobal de la Laguna (Tenerife) declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; or works of César Manrique in Lanzarote. There are also more hidden islands for tourists that dont like to feel being tourists. Then La Palma is possibly the most exciting island, see our article here
Anyway, there are lots of relaxing resorts to catch some vitamine D rays, and just have a cold beer or umbrella drink with good company in front of a beach or a pool garden. The Canaries are made for it.
