Last Friday, 50 whales were found on the beach on the shore in eastern Japan. 22 of them were rescued and returned to the sea. About 200 local volunteers helped with rescuing the stranded whales. This included also city government officials and local residents. There was also some surfers helping too.

It took about eight hours to return the surviving whales to the sea.

Melon-headed whales are commonly seen offshore around the area in the early spring and they get stranded from time to time. Reason is still unknown.
