The most pirated game ever in history is Giana Sisters. It was on sale for a week! Then Nintendo threatened it and it became not available as a commercial product. But by the time it was removed from the shops shelves. Giana Sisters was pirated in all directions. The game got released for Amiga, AtariST and Commodore 64 and it is one of those games that is so epic that Piracy actually saved it. Giana Sisters is the “female” version of Super Mario Bros. In this game, you play as Giana in levels that reminds of Super Mario Bros ones. Especially the two first ones.
So! With Game of Thrones season 7 being pirated over a billion times. Its pretty stunning, but Giana Sisters is for sure an icon like Game of Thrones. I am not saying that piracy is good, but in cases where something gets a status that is beyond clouds and sunshine activity. Then those that made Game of Thrones should be very happy. Piracy is bad in many cases, but it also allows people in poor regions of the world to be able to watch Game of Thrones too. There are adverts everywhere with Game of Thrones and both Internet news sites and magazines writes about it. It should be fair to say that piracy, even if its hurting the owners economicly it makes your product worldwide.
The seventh season of Game of Thrones were plagued by Piracy since the start
When something gets this popular as Game of Thrones have become. Its very hard to stop the piracy. HBO were plagued by hacks, leaks and piracy. So, someone internally in HBO must have given information to the leakers somehow.
The vast majority of the pirate ‘views’ came from streaming services (85%), followed by torrents (9%) and direct downloads (6%). Private torrent trackers are at the bottom with less than one percent.
Andy Chatterley, MUSO‘s CEO and Co-Founder, notes that the various leaks may have contributed to these high numbers. This is supported by the finding that the sixth episode, which leaked several days in advance, was pirated more than the season finale.
MUSO states that the latest season seven was pirated more than a billion times in total
Muso reveals that 84.7% watched Game of Thrones season 7 thru streaming, 9.1% downloaded thru Torrent, 5.6% downloaded thru direct links and 0.6% thru private torrent. The numbers can of course be much higher, because MUSO can for sure not control or be able to see all torrents downloads in the world. Now with The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites that is closed, the people which used to use those pirate sites have for sure found underground torrent sites that isn’t easy to find at all. Distrita opinion in closing the torrent sites is really bad, because now the piracy once again becomes something that computer loving people understands. All companies battling against piracy have made it much worse now for sure.
Before with all of the torrent sites open, instead of closing the torrent site down. You could actually catch the person which shares his torrent file much easier. But now with many torrent sites closed, the number saying 9.1% downloaded thru Torrent is wrong for sure. There is also no mentioning about FTP or even IRC. These are two ancient Internet technologies that is often ignored these days, but they are still being used.
The biggest failure that the companies have done battling piracy is to actually closing the torrent sites. You’ve just made it worse for yourself finding those which is responsible for sharing the pirated movie or tv series.
