Crossplatflorm Beginners Guide

Quake-LogoFirst Person Shooters
FPS is a genre that most of people thinks that is only playable on a Windows PC, but this is not true. The most known titles from ID Software like Quake 1, Quake 2 and even Quake 3 got pretty good crossplatform multiplayer gaming. You can play these games on Amiga vs PC vs Mac with no issues. For Amiga users! Make sure you got a Amiga that is capapble of having 30FPS or higher. ID Software did a lot for platforms all over that didn’t get great full games and open sourced their executables.

Including the Quake crossplatform multiplayer games, you also have various versions of Doom, Heretic and Hexen. For Amiga versions you can get different versions on Aminet, MorphOS-Files.net and on os4depot.net. For Windows, MacOSX and Linux just search the web and you’ll find them. Just remember that you need the data files. Either from shareware versions of the games or fullversions. Buying fullversion of the 3 first Quake games is getting harder and harder, but a bigger gamestore got them as classics for sure.

Amiga downloads was found on Aminet. MacOSX on MacUpdate website, Linux on Cnet.ned Download site and Windows version on Steam. Yes, you can still buy Quake 1. Just remember that you need to download or Buy the Windows version first and then extract the data files for the other operating systems.

* = AmigaOS 3.x can play Quake 2 PPC version if a PowerPC card is inserted.
Another note! – There is also a Quake 2 version made for AmigaOS 3.1 running on 68060++, but it doesnt have multiplayer option activated and because of that, it is excluded from this list for now.

At the same time as Maxis released their SimCity 2000 game, there was also another game called Transport Tycoon Deluxe game for Windows made by Chris Sawyers, that gave SimCity 2000 an quite extensive competition. And instead of vanishing, Transport Tycoon Deluxe game that focus on transportation building became quite huge in popularity. So much in fact, that few years ago an Open Source version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe was released for the community. The development of OpenTTD continues even today and it also gave crossplatform gaming a totaly new meaning in the start. Almost every type of operating system out there got an port, but remember to have the very same version of the game running on each operating system to play against each other.

OpenTTD is certainly one of the games that put every operating system together in a game. A game that doesn’t require too much and runs very smoothly makes it even more compatible than the Quake and Doom games from ID Software.

I don’t know how many hours that I spent playing OpenTTD on MorphOS towards severals Windows and MacOSX gamers. A really nice game and its totally Free.

With our small guide here, you can easily put up a crossplatform gaming party! Just remember to have the very same OpenTTD datafiles on all of the versions. Earlier versions of the game require the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe files etc.

Make sure that you have installed an TCP/IP stack for AmigaOS 3.x to run OpenTTD. AmigaOS 4.x and MorphOS comes with TCP/IP stacks and doesn’t need it to be installed. Both AmigaOS 4.x and MorphOS can run AmigaOS 3.x software, so installing v0.3.3 should work on both of these systems.
