AmigaOS as a mobile operating system would beat SymbianOS, Android and iOS

In 1985, Commodore launched Amiga 1000 with worlds very first 32-bit Multitasking Operating System that could show 4096 colours at once and play Stereo music! By 1994, AmigaOS evolved a lot and became a fantastic operating system. Yes, AmigaOS 3.1 was out before Windows 95 was even born! The requirements for mem and storage space sort of remained, but for better usage a small upgrade was always recommended.

Later AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS got released for the public but a mobile version of this fantastic operating system never saw the light. In this article I want to take you thru the mind of a Amiga user, trying to explaining why AmigaOS would have been a perfect MobileOS! And why it would have become the mobile operating system to have for a decade if Commodore, Escom or Gateway2000 did some real effort with it. Maybe the nightmare with SymbianOS would be history longtime before it got released?…

AmigaOS as a mobile operating system would be a Brilliant MobileOS

First thing to mention here is the basic requirements of AmigaOS 3.1, which was the latest operating system made by Commodore. This operating system came on 5x 880KB floppies. That means that the basic size of AmigaOS is 4.4MB in size. AmigaOS 3.1 also runs on 1MB of RAM Amiga machines! However, 2MB + some extra RAM is way better for sure.

AmigaOS 3.1 minimal requirements

  • 4.4MB HD space
  • 512KB of RAM
  • 68000 7.14MHz

AmigaOS 3.1 recommended requirements

  • 4.4MB HD space
  • 2MB of RAM
  • 68020 14.17MHz

Revolutionary specs even in 2017

These specs were quite rovultionary in 1993, but even today they are. Because of this, AmigaOS is still one of the fastest operating systems in usage still in 2017. Small mobile operating systems today is on several gigabyte in size, which is way too much for a device that is ment to be used for communicate with others! A operating system for mobiles, should be in few megabytes in size only.

Todays mobile operating systems should always give all of the resources, to the phones functions itself. This should have been priority number one! But instead, we find us using bloody big Android from Google or iOS from Apple. These two operating systems, is the most popular in the world today. But many knows that they can actually start to lag, just because of their humongous size data. This can be related to the filesystem used, or hardware that is made so fast by the company just so they can earn on you and ship it to you without checking it fully. This unhealthy action makes people angry, but because of many huge Android related companies. The popularity and complaints, won’t be taken that seriouselly which is not good at all. Here it is a huge difference between Samsung, Sony, LG and BlackBerry etc. that produces Android phones. Samsung can create millions of phones, send it to customers and even some percent is bad made they will survive… And that’s what seems to matter for them.

Android apps Manages to block calling Functions

Many Android phones, manages to get out of control. Especially if you install or use them in a way that steal lots of it’s resources.

My own experience with several Android phones that I had and others I’ve helped, is that the Android phone functions of these phones is getting out of control, once you have an app that heats up the phones resources. When this happens, then when someone is calling you. Then your Android device simply doesn’t manage to show the phone functions, which can result in that you can’t answer a call. The phones resources from the app is simply taking over every possibility for the system to handle the phone callling functions, and then the screen turns black! So you’re not able to do anything. This can also happen during a conversation. I have been in conversation which have ended, when I wanted to hang up but the system was so overloaded by some other app in the background that it wasn’t possible at all.

This doesn’t need to be apps that you have downloaded from the appstore, but also apps that comes stored with your phone!

I never had these issues on my SailfishOS phone from Jolla in Finland. On AmigaOS for mobiles, this would also not be a issue for sure. Just look at one of many videos on YouTube showing Amiga 1200 with its 50MHz multitasks. If AmigaOS were made for a phone today, the easiest way would be to port AROS over. It just flies in VM mode or standalone! Windows or MacOSX feels laggish for sure!… It is free and all you need to do to get it on your phone is explained in this AROS installation article here.

Size should matter on every Mobile Device

If there was a operating system for mobile phones that would survive and would actually have true multitasking that wouldn’t halt other programs when multitasking. Then my mind always land on AmigaOS, because of its small size. Then, when different apps would run at the same time it wouldn’t lock the phone app at all. MeeGo, SailfishOS and QNX for Mobiles (Blackberry OS 10) are 3 fantastic examples, that is capable of doing this. However, when big companies like Intel or BlackBerry decides to go for the more popular-produced operating systems instead and ignore these fantastic operating systems. Then they are doomed! Jolla had one of the better chances with SailfishOS, but their  good reputation sort of vanished for every presentation they had. Their really bad customer service killed they product totally. How did a company that wanted to succeed just ignore those answering people customer service questions? If not only reason, this was a huge tip backwards as you sort of felt as if you as a user were nothing for them.

All AmigaOS flavours delivers Lightning speed

With lightning speed, all AmigaOS flavour is a operating systems choice, that would never be able to affect the phone dialing system, which often happens on Android phones.

AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS requires a bit more space and mem to work than the classic one from Commodore. Arround 300-400MB in size in total, they give apps huge mem and storage space etc. These new AmigaOS operating systems also support low-powered PowerPC Apple and IBM CPU’s pretty good like AmigaOS 3.1 does on the 68k cpu line from Motorola. So, there are way more modern versions of AmigaOS which is out on the market. These, would be perfect examples for giving mobile phones the performance that they actually deserve to have. They would becom brilliant MobileOS alternatives for sure if there was a company out there that would use some funds on it. All of AmigaOS flavours are very easy to customize and to make it work on a mobile phone or a tablet wouldn’t be a problem at all. Magic User Interface, the flexibility of adding addons to the OS and the speed would kickout both Android and iOS, if this was released back in 2000.

But even today in 2017! I would say that AmigaOS as a mobile operating system would kick Android and iOS a lot. If it was made today, with the community help. Then wow! It would be the best mobile operating system ever. With OWB Amiga Mobile version (webkit browser), Great Mail app, Social Media apps and other useful apps. The Amiga community is one of the most active underground developing platforms out there, that would make your days way better with much less stress. Despite all companies failours, AmigaOS lives on it’s own spirit that is just growing and growing. It is one of those things in life that is just alive because of it’s users and no company spending trillion of dollars on it. But, with a company wanting honour then spending a few on some brilliant developers then this would be possible for sure!

AmigaOS for PowerPC and x86, supports many types of monitors. The classic AmigaOS line also have, but you need to install addons to make it compatible. If one of the AmigaOS for PowerPC, or x86/ARM focused on beeing a MobileOS. Then that would revolutionize the phone market a lot!

With AmigaOS as mobile operating systen. No need for iOS, Android or SymbianOS!

The size of AmigaOS should already be able to tell you and me, that AmigaOS would be perfect as a MobileOS. The same goes for CPU power. You simply don’t need a 3GHz CPU, to make apps and software run at lightspeed. With AmigaOS, this is what makes it special from the very start. There is nothing that laggs in AmigaOS, MorphOS or AROS. They just work! And thats what a mobile should. I remember the SymbianOS times, where phones out of sudden booted. The nextgen AmigaOS systems got support for mem protection, support for SMP in development and 64-bit support in development now. But back in 2000, with some effort and economy. AmigaOS would have become a brilliant mobile operating system. With great calling software and apps support. AmigaOS would turn any mobiles out there to multitasking horsepower lightning speed phones. Your latest Samsung S8 would boot in 5 seconds, Multitask like no other and have no issues of slowdowns. But what to do, when AmigaOS is still a underground commercial operating system.

Conclusion

This article is made for giving you something to think about and also share some important knowledge about AmigaOS for you. This small but lightning fast operating system deserves to be made for phones which have become small mini-computers that everyone ueses daily. They connect you with the desktop world of computing and allows you to communicate. AmigaOS is for sure one of the missing puzzles for making the mobile experience a flawless one.

May the AmigaOS as a mobile operating system be a vision and a dream that hopefully one day will happen. Maybe because of this article? Maybe because someone with sense in mind want to invest in this brilliant operating system? What do you think? Or, do you think that today's mobile operating systems are good enough?
